Roanoke College marked a major milestone on Thursday with the official dedication of the McConnon Discovery Center, a massive $60 million investment in the future of STEM education. The 32,000-square-foot facility opened its doors earlier this semester, offering students a sophisticated environment designed specifically to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application.
The center is a testament to community support, funded by the contributions of more than 1,000 donors who wanted to ensure local students have access to world-class resources. Inside, the building is packed with versatile workspaces and specialized labs for biology, chemistry, anatomy, and physiology. An expansive engineering lab allows for large-scale experimentation, while a rooftop terrace provides a fresh outdoor setting for studying and instruction.
President Frank Shushok Jr. emphasized that these modern spaces are essential for preparing graduates to navigate an ever-changing global landscape. By prioritizing interdisciplinary learning and research, the college aims to give its students a competitive edge. Karin Saoub, dean of the School of Health, Science and Sustainability, echoed this sentiment, describing the building as a transformative tool that will empower the next generation of healthcare professionals and innovators.
Beyond its academic utility, the McConnon Discovery Center was built with an eye toward environmental responsibility. With the integration of solar panels and a green roof, the college expects the building to earn LEED Silver certification. This commitment to sustainability mirrors the academic goals of the institution, blending cutting-edge scientific discovery with a conscious effort to protect the planet.
