You do not need a cabinet full of bright plastic bottles to keep a home sparkling. A handful of humble ingredients, many of them already in your kitchen, can handle most day-to-day jobs for a fraction of the price. White vinegar cuts grease and soap scum, baking soda scrubs and deodorizes, lemon juice tackles mineral spots, olive oil polishes wood, and plant-based castile soap lifts everyday dirt beautifully.

For an all-purpose spray, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a bottle and add a few drops of lavender or eucalyptus oil if you like the scent. Want something prettier? Soak citrus peels in vinegar for a few weeks, strain, then dilute. For the oven, spread a baking soda paste inside, steering clear of the heating elements, leave it overnight and wipe it away. A fizzing mix of baking soda and vinegar refreshes the toilet bowl.

  • Glass: water, a splash of vinegar and a little rubbing alcohol
  • Wood polish: olive oil, a bit of vinegar and lemon juice
  • Carpet refresher: baking soda with a few drops of essential oil
  • Tub scrub: baking soda paste with liquid castile soap

A few habits make homemade cleaners work better. Reuse sturdy spray bottles, ideally glass, and label each one with its ingredients and the date. Shake before every use, since natural mixtures tend to separate, and store them somewhere cool and dark. Toss any batch that changes color or smell. Keep expectations realistic, too: these blends may need a bit more elbow grease on tough jobs, and they are not a substitute for a proper disinfectant when you truly need one.
