Motown legend Stevie Wonder has taken legal action to reclaim a Studio City residence where his former fiancée, Carmen Efferson, has resided rent-free for nearly forty years. According to documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the arrangement began in July 1988 through an oral agreement between the two. However, that long standing peace shattered recently when a dispute over property maintenance sparked a volatile exchange between Efferson and Wonder’s legal representation.
The conflict reportedly escalated after Efferson received a notification regarding a necessary property tax inspection. Instead of cooperating, she allegedly sent a profanity laced email to the singer’s lawyers, accusing them of harassment and citing white male privilege while explicitly refusing to grant access to the home. This refusal led to complications with the property’s insurance renewal, resulting in a financial penalty for the music icon.
In response to the outburst, Wonder’s attorney clarified that the staff member involved was neither white nor male, but warned that continued defiance would lead to eviction. Despite multiple attempts by the legal team to arrange inspections and provide deadlines for her departure, Efferson allegedly remained in the three bedroom home and threatened to call police during subsequent correspondences.
Now seventy six and currently touring for the anniversary of his landmark album Songs in the Key of Life, Wonder is seeking to formally remove Efferson from the premises. Beyond regaining control of the multimillion dollar estate, he is also asking the court to order her to pay six hundred dollars to cover the costs associated with the lapsed insurance policy caused by her lack of cooperation.
